Reasons Your Central AC Unit May Not be Working
When it comes to in-home appliances (and in-home cooling and heating systems), we tend to not give them much thought.
Until they stop working.
If you’re having issues with your central AC system and you’re feeling more than a little bit frustrated, we understand your pain.
Below are just a few troubleshooting tips that can hopefully help you diagnose the root of your problem.
If your AC is turning on, then off, then on, then off again, all in a short period of time, this type of glitch is known as short cycling. Yes, it’s annoying, but it’s also one of the most common AC issues that Fort Collins, Colorado homeowners have.
Below are 4 things that may be causing your system to act up.
- Your thermostat is in a less-than-ideal spot. If your thermostat is close to a window (and thus, it’s in the direct line of sunlight), or if it’s in close proximity to an AC vent, this is likely the reason your system is giving you grief. If you’ve determined your thermostat needs to be moved, call Redline Heating and Cooling today so we can help move it to a more central location.
- You can’t remember the last time you swapped out your AC filter. Your AC filter should be inspected once a month, and it should be changed as often as deemed necessary. If your filter hasn’t been changed (or cleaned) in you can’t remember how long, this could be your problem.
- Your system is too big! In our last blog we talked about how buying a bigger, more powerful system isn’t always better. If you wind up purchasing one that’s too big for your home, it can run up your electric bill and it will run indefinitely—both of which are likely to cause short cycling.
- You may have a refrigerant leak. If your system is leaning refrigerant, this can cause it to short cycle. If you’re not sure if you’re having this problem, call our office today so we can send a technician out to give your AC unit a once over.
